Porcelain Crowns
Unless you are a rap star you most likely would not like to have a mouth full of metal teeth in the gold or silver style. This is the oldest and most used
dental procedure known today that will actually improve the way that the teeth look, even though it is hard to find a dentist that still uses gold. Crowns are nothing more than sleeves that are fitted over the existing tooth to give it a more natural and healthy appearance. The reason that gold was used is because of the durability issues. Gold is a highly durable metal that will last usually until death. The issue of gold is that it is not a natural look and many people are not interested in having a mouth full of metal, so gold has taken a back seat to some of the newer cosmetic dental procedures.
The newest and most sought after crowns are the new porcelain crowns. The reason that this new procedure is so popular is because it offers the patient a more natural look that improves the smile. This is what most people are after when they seek out crowns and they are finding that the advantages of porcelain crowns are great as compared to the older style. In most cases people will want porcelain crowns because there is a tooth or teeth that have a poor appearance. They want this to be covered without having to have the teeth or tooth extracted.
The issue of porcelain crowns is the fact that they are very effective in making the teeth look better overall. It is also the matter of saving the existing teeth rather than removing them. There are cases where teeth that are decaying can be saved by use of porcelain crowns and the decaying will cease when it becomes encased. This is not always the case and it depends on the tooth. If the overall structure is still intact the porcelain crowns are most likely going to be effective, but a tooth that is badly damaged may not be able to be saved in this case. The dentist will have the final word on whether or not a tooth can be saved.
Porcelain crowns are more effective for the teeth that will be seen when you are smiling. If you are looking to have a healthier looking smile porcelain crowns may be the way to go. In most cases the dentist will not put porcelain crowns on all the teeth. This can take a long time and it is not really worth the effort as the teeth in the back of the mouth will not be seen and may not be able to accept the porcelain crowns at all.
Having the porcelain crowns procedure is very simple. It will take a couple of office visits for the completion but it is well worth the time. In most cases the first visit will have the
dentist making a mold of the teeth that will be crowned. During the next visit the dentist will apply the porcelain crowns and give you the specific instructions for care of the new crowns. You will find that these will last a lifetime as long as you take care of them.
